How many nappies do I need?

Considerations include:
  • How many you will use a day
  • How often you wash
  • How long they take to dry.

Try the calculator below to see how many might suit you.

How many nappies do I need?
Choose how many cloth nappies you'd like to use each day and how often you'd like to wash them. We'll work out how many to have in your collection.
6
Newborns can need up to 12 a day and toddlers 3 or 4. If you're starting part time, try one or two a day.
How often will you wash?
You'll need about 18 nappies 6 a day for the 2 days between washes, plus 6 more to use while a wash is drying.

Every 2 days is ideal. You can go up to 7 days if you store nappies in an open laundry basket with good air flow so they dry out rather than fester, and you use a thorough wash routine.

A guide only. Add a few extra if you dry indoors in winter, or if your nappies are slow to dry, such as thick all-in-ones.

Consider extra inserts

Shells are quick to dry where inserts take longer - afterall, their job is to hold on to moisture!

Consider purchasing (or making from an old towel or flannelette sheet) extra inserts to boost your nappy stash without the expense of buying extra nappies.
